Outfit ideas for family photo sessions
My clients are tired of not knowing what to wear to their family sessions. A huge part of the outcome of family lifestyle photo sessions is styling and outfits! That is why I put this guide of what to wear to your session, together. That way your family photos look and feel the way you want with zero effort.
Coordinating not matching- If you can only follow one rule, this is the one! Your outfits should have coordinating colors and patterns. You should not be matching, for example, no all plaid, or white t shirts with blue jeans. If you’re anything like me, this doesn’t come naturally. Find a neutral color pallet and stick with this. You can add pops of color to take it to the next level.
Start with Mom!- Find an outfit that mom feels comfortable in. COMFORT is the key word. I really enjoy photographing mom in a flowy dress or skirt that really accentuates movement. You can also find rompers or jumpsuits that achieve this as well. Please make sure it is true to who you are! If you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, you will not be comfortable in the photos!
Texture and Patterns- Add different textures and patterns for another elements that are pleasing to the eye. A small floral print dress for mom and a solid cable knit sweater for a child go together and add more dimension. A linen dress for a child and another child in jean overalls work so well together!
Layers- Cardigans and/or jackets to get a more comfortable, relaxed feel. When layering, use two colors. You can use the same color family and do different shades, or you can add a pop of color as long as it doesn’t clash with each-other or anyone else’s outfit. Different textures are great for layering!
Accessorize- Hats, jewelry, scarves, cozy blankets are all great accessories to bring to your session. They’ll add some interest to the photos and give them a cozy feel.
